Evaluation - Q6
What have you
learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
Final Cut Pro:
During the process we have learnt how to
improve our skills with using Final Cut pro, therefore we knew what should be
done in order to make it to a good standard. By this, we had to ensure that scenes didn't 'jump' into each other. This meant that we needed to learn how to insert transitions, we commonly used the 'cross dissolve' transition because it wasn't an obvious transition, meaning that when it was put into place, the scenes rolled into each other nicely. However, at times it is clear that the transition has been put in place because it jumps to a different type of setting such as going from inside the house to outside of the house. Following on from this, we learnt how to cut
down footage that we didn't want and how to insert music on top of it as well
as sound effects that compliment the media product. When inserting the music,
we learnt how to mute it or turn down the volume at certain moments. We
realised that it is important to learn these skills in order to produce a decent
media product, therefore if we didn't know them then our media product would be
have a lot of jump cuts and we would have footage included that wasn't
necessary. Furthermore, by using final cut pro we were able to enhance our media product as we were able to insert 'police sirens' which meant we were able to show a clear narrative. However we didn't want the sirens going on throughout the whole product, therefore we inserted music once it had finished so it wasn't silent. We used the song 'cannonball' by Damien Rice because we thought that it's not the type of song an audience would usually expect in an opening sequence and it gives the impression that something else is yet to be revealed. When we were using dialogue, we needed to turn the volume down in order to be able to hear what they are saying, therefore this skill became useful as we wanted to portray the idea of an interrogation taking place, therefore the dialogue was needed.
YouTube
When we needed to publish our media product,
we had to put it on YouTube, therefore we needed to find the required skills in
order to carry this out. Once we found how to upload it to YouTube from Final
Cut Pro, we then had to upload it from there to our blogs. These were quite
simple skills to have once we discovered how to go about it, therefore we were
able to upload all of the media products we made leading up to our final one.
Research Resources:
In order to present our research, we had to
use different presenting softwares such as prezi, powerpoint, emaze etc. Therefore
we decided to use these to show our research and our analysis. When using these
softwares we learnt that we needed to include screenshots of evidence to back
up our research, especially in our similar products and we had to crop the images
we found in order to view the text alongside it. Even though these are quite
basic skills, they were important in order to present our research and analysis
as otherwise it would have all been presented in a word document which would
have been dull to read.
The Camera:
When collating the footage we thought about
the different angles we could use to make it better, so we used the camera to
get the effect we wanted by positioning it in the right place. For example we
used an over the shoulder shot as well as a high angle shot to show the females
weakness and the dominance and power the male roommate has. Another shot we
used was a two shot which showed the interrogation process between the roommate
and the detective, however the effect of this shot made them be viewed as
equals even though the detective had more power due to his occupation. It was
important to use different shots in order to portray the intention of the
narrative because if it was all filmed in the same angle, it wouldn't have the
same effect as the audience wouldn't be able to see their expressions and they
wouldn’t be able to make judgements on what that character is like.
Furthermore, when we were completing the production process, we had to learn
how to use the camera given, therefore we had to figure out how it worked.
However, it turned out that it was a simple camera that was easy to use which
meant that we were able to collate the footage needed easily. When filming, we
decided to go against using a tripod as we the shots we were taken meant that
the camera didn’t have to follow the character round.
